Voluntary services to the poor with new goals Dedicated Volunteer Service with Fresh Goals for the Less Fortunate

No matter how many schemes the governments undertake to eradicate poverty, they are unable to achieve the intended goals. In this regard, the Lions Club is serving the poor worldwide to do its bit to help them. In 1917, a man named Melvin Jokes started the Lions Club. Lions Club has been doing voluntary service in our state for 47 years. It started its branch in Hyderabad in 1956. Lion A Vijay Kumar will be sworn in as the new Governor of Lions Club Hyderabad District on July 2 in Philadelphia, USA. News Today interviewed him on this occasion. Interview Details:
 
Question: Can you explain the objectives of Lions Club and its ideals?
Answer: Absolutely! The Lions Club is an organization driven by the principles of freedom, knowledge, and national security. It is an institution born with the purpose of serving the less fortunate. The primary goal of Lions Club is to engage 100% of willing volunteers in providing service for those in need. Effective promotion and awareness among the public, rather than exploiting club services extensively, is what the Lions Club focuses on.
 
Question: What are the service programs you are conducting in Hyderabad District?
Answer: In the Hyderabad District, which includes parts of Adilabad, Nizamabad, Medak, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, and Mahbubnagar, as well as parts of Raichur and Bidar in Karnataka within the C2 boundary, there are 74 clubs and 2780 members dedicatedly engaged in community service. The main focus of the organization, Lions Club International District 320C2, is conducting eye care programs. The districts you’ve mentioned encompass regions like Adilabad, Nizamabad, Medak, and Rangareddy in Telangana and Raichur and Bidar in Karnataka.
 
These service initiatives are extensive and diverse, aiming to benefit society and improve lives. The programs include eye donation, free medical camps, providing free education, promoting women’s health, offering free medical care for eye ailments and other health issues, establishing blood banks, and conducting dental and eye care camps. Additionally, there is a strong emphasis on charitable initiatives such as providing free spectacles, constructing bus stops, organizing medical and dental camps, and contributing to various community welfare projects. All these endeavors are aimed at making a significant impact on the lives of people in need.
 
The organization has successfully established prominent eye hospitals like the Nizam’s Cancer Hospital’s Ophthalmology Block, Lions North Eye Hospital at Secunderabad, and Ramireddy Memorial Lions Eye Hospital at Mahabubnagar, where essential medical care is provided to patients. Moreover, two blood banks have been set up, namely, Goel Blood Bank on Lions Maternal Day and Raj Blood Bank on Lions Banji Kishan Rao Blood Bank Day. They facilitate blood donation for those in critical need. Furthermore, with a 25% discount, the Lions Pathological Lab Services have been inaugurated to provide affordable medical testing and diagnostic services. In addition to these initiatives, the organization conducts dental and eye care camps, offers ophthalmic and dental care in remote areas, builds bus stops, and provides medical and dental facilities to underserved communities, all contributing to the betterment of society.
 
Question: What are the achievements you have accomplished so far?
Answer: With a systematic approach, determination, and a service-oriented mindset, we have achieved significant successes in every endeavor we undertake. Performing a surgery on someone’s eye would cost around a lakh of rupees, but through the efforts of Lions Club, we have been able to provide that same operation for free. Every year, we collect funds and resources to facilitate eye surgeries for those in need.
 
The Lions Club plans and organizes these surgeries to ensure they are conducted completely free of charge. We aim to gather around 100 corneas annually to meet the urgent needs of individuals. This year, our goal is to procure corneas from 200 donors. Our intention is singular – to help people. We want you to be aware of our services and use them as needed. Please utilize these services to the fullest extent possible. Remember that we are available for your service 24/7.

 
Question: You served as the District Vice Governor for the year 1996-97. What were your goals and objectives when you served as the Governor for the year 1997-98?
Answer: As the District Vice Governor for the year 1996-97, I worked with great enthusiasm to set new goals and objectives. Moving beyond regular goals, I introduced new ones related to Family Care Projects. Some of the key initiatives included performing 15 family planning surgeries per year, providing an ambulance to each revenue district, organizing special programs for mentally challenged children, implementing a special insurance program of 2 lakh rupees for club members, focusing on collecting 15 units of blood per unit, and establishing a blood bank in every revenue district. Special efforts were made to conduct eye surgeries, improve the lives of street children, provide vocational and technical education, and organize ‘Beggar-Free Zones.’ We also promoted eye donation and established eye collection centers. We aimed to provide quality education, encourage technological education, and enhance vocational training.
 
I was involved in various activities such as cataract surgeries, traffic management, and providing all necessary items to the victims of cleft surgeries. Additionally, I initiated the construction of canteens for visually impaired children, encouraged eye donation, and set up AI. I focused on providing special health services to destitute children and launched tree plantation drives to maintain environmental balance. As a token of our service, we contributed to the society. Mr. Vijay Kumar, who was the District Vice President in 1987-89, continued his journey with remarkable success. He held positions as President, Zone Chairman, District Chairman, Region Chairman, and Vice Governor, winning numerous awards along the way.
